    Workflow has been a hot topic in all kinds of software, including applications used in accounting firms and in the general accounting packages used by companies to run their financial operations. After all, most of these organizations have software applications. Few larger than the very small companies linger in the era of pencil and paper.

    The trick is getting value out of the investment. Two areas are particularly important in this endeavor. One is business intelligence, or whatever you want to call getting understandable information out of the data. The other is workflow.

    Workflow is simply about who does what in what order.     The Sage FAS Online community is divided into four areas. The Connect section lets users interact with their peers and discuss topics in a forum environment. The Solve section provides a searchable knowledgebase with answers to common questions. The Participate section enables users to provide feedback and suggestions for improving the software. The Learn section offers a library of documents, including user guides, a depreciation guide, and tax information from U.S. and Canadian authorities.

    "In Australia we hosted the sixth highest percentage of underground economy servers, accounting for 4 per cent of the total identified globally," Mr Scroggie said.

    "Some of the largest underground activity in the IRC networks was observed on servers in Australia, while the 14th longest active underground server had a local address."

    On software piracy, Symantec found that Australia was ranked 10th in the number of illegal downloads of computer games and specialist multimedia and business applications by country (excluding music and video file piracy).

    The nation also ranked 10th in the number of users making software files available for illegal copying.

    Symantec's figures are far higher than the latest Australian Institute of Criminology Underground Markets in Stolen Digital Information Review, in May 2007, in which Australia was not in the top 10. More>>

  • ( ) UK SBs challenged to dump installed s/w for 24 hours

    UK: Accounting software company KashFlow is challenging UK small businesses to dump their desktop applications for 24 hours during the UK's first national Cloud Computing Day on December 12.

    The event is being organised by KashFlow to encourage UK small businesses to evaluate online applications and speed up the migration from traditional word processing, spreadsheet, accounting, email and contact management systems installed on computers to their web-based counterparts.

    Small businesses will be able to share their experiences throughout the day online. A post-event survey will reveal important small business opinions about how cloud computing will help the UK to work more efficiently.

  • ( ) Symantec: Underground internet economy continues to grow

    Desktop games were the most pirated software, accounting for 49 percent of all file instances observed.

    Symantec observed 69,130 distinct active advertisers and over 44 million total messages posted on underground economy servers during this reporting period.

    The United States hosted 41 percent of the total observed underground economy servers worldwide, while romania had the second highest percentage at 13 percent of the total.

    Phishing scam hosting services were offered for an average price of $10 with prices ranging from $2 to $80.
