  • ( ) Mind Over Machines Changes its Name to Mindover Software

"Today, most purchasers of accounting software and other business critical applications use an Internet search engine to find vendors," Manzer said. "Having the word 'software' in our name more closely aligns us with common search terms used to find the business software we sell like Sage Accpac ERP, Sage MAS 500 and SageCRM.

The name also provides a bridge between old and new. Manzer emphasized: "We really wanted a name that would provide the smoothest transition possible for our customers and prospects. Because our official corporate name has always been Mindover Corp, several of our customers actually suggested we use it instead. So, by keeping a similar look for the logo, creating a single word 'Mindover' and substituting 'Software' in place of 'Machines,' we accomplished our goal with minimal effort."

  • ( ) VAT cut makes more work for finance

Although VAT is a variable tax, and most accounting software has been written to accommodate changes, the majority of customers have never had to use this facility and may panic at the year-end deadline for accounts.

Dennis Keeling, chief executive of Business Software Intelligence and a former chief executive of the
Business Application Software Developers’ Association, said: ‘It isn’t straight forward changing VAT.

Accountants’ phones will be ringing off the hook with people trying to find out how to do it.’

‘Software that has been built bespoke may not have the ability to change quickly which could add further problems’ he added.

Ewen Ferguson, associate director at Protiviti, a consultancy, added that many IT systems have the 17.5% VAT rate ‘hard-coded’ into them within calculations. More>>

  • ( ) Fired superintendent points finger at business administrator

However, McGann and her attorney, Andru Volinsky, have argued the problems were the result of different accounting software used in each of the three towns comprising SAU 44.

During testimony McGann alleged that much of the financial mismanagement she has been accused of was due to the under-qualifications of Tappan, who was not certified for his business administrator position when he held the office. Tappan, who was business administrator during the 2007-2008 school year, resigned from his position in late August, shortly before McGann's dismissal.

McGann and Tappan's testimonies marked the end of the evidence finding portion of the hearing.

The hearing was presided over Dean Eggert, and attorney who has been asked to act as a judge or mediator figure during the proceedings. More>>

Following a lengthy career in accounting software publishing, Kurjan moved to Microsoft in 2001 as a general manager in charge of 500 employees. Three years later, he left to start Plumbline Solutions, a software consulting company, but his career path didn't end there.

When John Crawford, a former colleague, opened a Six Disciplines Leadership Center franchise in Findlay, Ohio, Kurjan felt inspired. So when Crawford became ill, Kurjan stepped in. "I saw this as an opportunity to really take everything I'd learned in my 20-plus years in business and put it to work for my clients," says Kurjan, 48.

Six Disciplines specializes in business consulting, helping companies execute their goals and improve their businesses. Since taking over Crawford's franchise in 2006, Kurjan has purchased four more locations. More>>
