  • ( ) Opinion: Why SMBs cannot afford to ignore BPM

As long as the PCs are running OK and the accounting software keeps financial records, the business is on track. • ( ) Birmingham-area residents and panelist sound off on economic crisis

Yet Broom, chair of the university's accounting department, feels the economic crisis is so severe that Congress has had to step in and provide a financial safety net.

"Without the antidote being discussed for the Big Three and some changes in the way they operate, they will fail," Broom said.

Gene Fuller, who owns TimeMAPS, a financial literacy software company, said he believes Alabama could benefit if one or more of the Big Three collapse. Huff disagreed, saying U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, is off-base in his assertion that the Big Three should restructure through bankruptcy.

"If the Big Three go under, the dealers could go under and think about the impact of that in our community," Huff said. "The auto suppliers won't be able to get by just doing business with foreign companies like Honda and Toyota."

Bob Dickerson of the Birmingham Business Resource Center, an NCRC board member who coordinated the Birmingham meeting, said the sessions are being videotaped and will be forwarded to members of Congress and President-elect Barack Obama. More>>
