  • ( ) Intuit Microsoft War: Microsoft Loses Again

Microsoft created it several years after buying heavyweight accounting software producers Great Plains and Solomon. Counting eary losses on these products, this new Intuit Microsoft War investment was about $2 billion. Microsoft originally referred to Microsoft Office Accounting as a Microsoft Intuit War "QuickBooks killer." However, sales were so bad that the $150 price soon went from $150 to $50 and then became a free download, so Microsoft Loses Again. They actually never even made it past number two Peachtree. Many thought the product manager would be the next Microsoft CEO, but he left soon after the new Microsoft Intuit War disaster became an apparent and Microsoft loses again.

Microsoft still sells a $200 version called Microsoft Office Accounting Professional. More>>
  • ( ) In Search of Free, Open Source Apps

The categories include accounting software, content management systems, CRM, desktop environments, e-mail clients, video encoding tools, and much more. As a condensed way to evaluate well-known open source applications, it works nicely.

I've written before several times about PortableApps.com. For Windows users, it's a very good way to get bushels of open source applications in a single download. For Mac users, Mac Libre is an equivalent site that also offers lots of good applications in one download. Here again, neither of these sites is as exhaustive as the database-driven sites, but they do allow you to easily and quickly evaluate individual applications that could make a difference for you.

OpenDesktop.org is a relatively new site that houses a lot of applications available for free. More>>

  • ( ) Local net crime rises

"In Australia we hosted the sixth highest percentage of underground economy servers, accounting for 4 per cent of the total identified globally," Mr Scroggie said.

"Some of the largest underground activity in the IRC networks was observed on servers in Australia, while the 14th longest active underground server had a local address."

On software piracy, Symantec found that Australia was ranked 10th in the number of illegal downloads of computer games and specialist multimedia and business applications by country (excluding music and video file piracy).

The nation also ranked 10th in the number of users making software files available for illegal copying.

Symantec's figures are far higher than the latest Australian Institute of Criminology Underground Markets in Stolen Digital Information Review, in May 2007, in which Australia was not in the top 10. More>>

  • ( ) Review: iPhone OS 2.2 Software

Perhaps they'll blame their subscription accounting model again? iSigh.

Remarkable also by it's absence — again — is the much ballyhooed Push Notification Service (announced during WWDC 2008), intended to provide the semblance of multi-tasking to 3rd party apps by sending badges, sounds, and pop-ups through a central Apple server to alert users of, for example, new IMs or tweets. (Should we even bother to mention the continued, and continually unexplained, absence of cut and paste, MMS, unified inbox, video recording, etc.)

Note: We updated just fine using iTunes 8.0.1, but you may want to consider grabbing yesterday's 8.0.2 release first.

But enough dwelling on the didn't gets. Read on after the jump for the we gots!

    iPhone OS 2.2 Release Notes

iPhone iPhone 3G The Fixes Are In

Much like 2.1, and as can easily be seen by the list above, 2.2 is much ado about fixes. More>>
